Abstract

: Cement is a binder that is constantly used as a concrete material. However, its production is expensive and pollutes the environment through the release of oxides of carbon which cause the depletion of the ozone layer. Currently, attention has shifted to the use of agricultural and industrial wastes as partial replacement of cement. In this study, Rice husk ash and Cassava peel ash were used to produce concrete specimens. RHA and CPA partially replaced cement at 20%, 25% and 30%. After 24hrs of casting, the specimens were cured for 7 days and 28 days. The compressive strengths of both RHA and CPA were tested and the results compared. An M25 OPC/RHA Concrete at 28days of curing results are 0%(35.3N/mm2), 20%(37.9N/mm2), 25%(20.53N/mm2) and 30%(12.9N/mm2) while the results of OPC/CPA replacements are 0% (35.3N/mm2), 20% (28.3N/mm2), 25% (27.6N/mm2) and 30% (22.4N/mm2). It was finally concluded that agricultural wastes such as RHA and CPA can be used as partial replacement of cement in production of concrete and also the replacement of cement with RHA should not be more than 20 % and the maximum replacement of O.P.C concrete by CPA at 25%.
